Emily lives in Lewes, East Sussex with her husband and two young sons.
She studied the Faber Academy novel writing course in 2012 while working as a support worker for male, female and transgender sex workers in London, and met her agent, Nelle Andrew, soon after the course finished.
If You Knew Her was published by Little, Brown and Harper US in 2017 and translated into eight other languages. Grace is Gone followed in 2020, published in the UK and US and four other languages. The Herd was pre-empted by Transworld in 2020 and selected for the Richard & Judy book club, with film and TV rights bought by Sharon Horgan's Merman Productions. In 2022 Emily signed a further two-book deal with Transworld, and Private Lives was published in 2025.
